Closet run on the wall

A closet from the Closet Builder is several cabinets on one wall, or on three. Build each one with its own guide, then put them up here: in order, left to right, each screwed to the wall and to the one before it.

Part 1

Before you start

Step 1. Build every cabinet first

Build each cabinet with its own guide (reach-in or wardrobe) up to the step where it goes against the wall, and fit out the inside later if you like.

Step 2. Work out the order

Your order confirmation and the plan in your account show every wall, with the cabinets numbered left to right as you face it. You put them in in that order, left to right, each one screwed to the one before it.

A walk-in or a closet with corners: one run of cabinets carries on into each corner and the other stops 14-1/2" short of it. Put in the run that carries through first, then the one that stops short. Runs on different walls are never screwed to each other.

CheckMark the studs on every wall before the first cabinet goes up, a little above the cabinets' height, so you can see them once the cabinets are in.

Side by side

Step 3. Put the first cabinet up

Stand the leftmost cabinet in its place, level it with shims and screw it to the studs, as its own guide says: two screws through the top back stretcher and two through the bottom one.

The first cabinet, screwed to the wall.

Step 4. Bring the next one beside it

Stand the next cabinet hard against the right side of the first, back to the wall. Shim it until its top and its front line up with the first one's. A deeper cabinet beside a shallower one stands out further: the backs line up on the wall, not the fronts.

The second cabinet beside the first.

Step 5. Screw them together

The left cabinet's right side is drilled for it: three holes, 2" back from the front of the shallower cabinet, near the top, the middle and the bottom. From inside the left cabinet, drive a #8 × 1-1/4" screw through each hole into the right cabinet's side; it drills its own way in. Then press one of our labels over each screw head.

TipClamp the two fronts together before you drive the screws, so nothing slides as they pull tight.

Three screws from inside the left cabinet, a label over each.

Step 6. Screw it to the wall, and on along the run

Screw the new cabinet to the studs the same way, two screws through each back stretcher. Then bring the next one beside it, and so on to the end of the wall.

CarefulEvery cabinet is screwed to the wall, not only to its neighbor.

Part 3

Corners

Step 7. Where two walls meet

The run that carries into the corner goes in first, right up to the side wall. The run on the other wall then starts 14-1/2" out from the first run's face: the gap is how you reach into the corner, so it is left open, with no doors or drawers in front of it.

Measure the 14-1/2" from the front of the first run, along the floor, before you stand the first cabinet of the second run.

CheckBefore you screw a corner's first cabinet to the wall, check it is square to the cabinets on the other wall with a framing square.

After

Looking after it

A week after you build it, and every few months after that, check that the wall screws and the connectors are tight. A drawer that rubs or a door that sits out of line is a slide or a hinge to adjust, not a part to force: call us and we will talk you through it.
