How much does a custom closet cost?

Southeast Closet Company · · 5 min read

The short answer

It depends on what you build: how much wall you fill, what goes inside each cabinet, and whether they are open reach-in modules or wardrobe cabinets with doors. Every closet is priced live as you design it, with delivery included.

  • There’s no price per foot to read off a chart. Every cabinet and every closet is priced live, for exactly what you choose.
  • The biggest things that move it: how many cabinets, how many drawers, and doors (a wardrobe cabinet) or open (a reach-in module).
  • Cabinets ordered together cost less than the same cabinets bought one at a time: order-together savings.
  • Delivery is included in every price, and so is installation by our crew near Ringgold, GA.

Priced live, not from a chart

A lot of closet companies price a closet after a designer has visited and drawn it up. We do it the other way round: every cabinet has its own page with its price on it, and the Closet Builder prices a whole closet, wall by wall, as you lay it out. Change a cabinet and the price changes with it.

The price is worked out from the real job you’ve drawn, not from a price per linear foot, so there’s no rule of thumb to give. The quickest honest answer is to draw your closet and look. If a price can’t be shown for a moment, the page says so rather than showing an old one.

How much wall you fill

The first thing that sets the price is the number of cabinets, and that comes from how much wall you are filling. A 6′ reach-in might take three cabinets; a walk-in with cabinets on three walls might take ten. Cabinets run from 18″ to 33″ wide, and a wider cabinet costs more than a narrower one, but less than two narrow ones.

You don’t have to fill every inch. A run can stop short of a wall, and space left open at the end of a run is useful for a hamper or a step stool.

What goes inside

Inside each cabinet, the parts are not equal. A shelf is one panel on four pins. A rod is a bar and two supports. A drawer is a small cabinet of its own: a box, a front, a pull and a pair of soft-close, full-extension slides. So an interior with four drawers costs more than the same cabinet with a rod, and a closet that hangs most of its clothes costs less than one that folds them.

That isn’t a reason to go without drawers. It is a reason to count what you fold before you choose how many. How to lay out a closet walks through it.

Reach-in modules or wardrobe cabinets

We build two kinds of cabinet. A reach-in module is 16″ deep and open at the front, for a closet that already has a door. A wardrobe cabinet is 22″ deep and shut with slab doors on soft-close hinges, for a bedroom wall or a walk-in. The wardrobe cabinet is deeper and has doors, so it costs more than the same interior as a reach-in module. Reach-in modules or wardrobe cabinets? helps you choose.

Stock sizes and custom sizes

Every cabinet comes in stock sizes, 18″, 21″, 24″, 27″, 30″, 33″ wide and 84″ or 92-5/8″ tall, and each size button on a product page shows its price. Any size in between is built to the sixteenth of an inch for a wall that needs it, and priced as you type it.

The taller height is worth a look: every interior gets more hanging or another shelf, and the page shows you what it costs next to the shorter one.

Order-together savings

Cabinets ordered together cost less than the same cabinets bought one at a time. We plan the whole order as one job, so less material goes to waste, and you keep the difference. The more you build, the more you save. It works in the Closet Builder and in the cart, which both show it as order-together savings.

So if you are planning a closet in stages, it usually pays to order it all at once.

What the price includes

The price you see is the price delivered. Delivery (curbside) goes anywhere in the lower 48 states and DC, and near our Ringgold, GA workshop you can choose Delivery + Installation, where our own crew builds it and fixes it to the wall. Both are included; you choose at checkout and nothing is added for either. Sales tax is added at checkout where we have to collect it.

Every cabinet is 3/4″ thermally fused laminate with matching edges, cut on our own CNC, joined with steel connectors, and covered by our lifetime limited warranty. Checkout also offers 0% APR financing for up to 24 months through Affirm or Klarna, who handle it.

Ways to keep the price down

  • Use double hang for shirts and trousers instead of drawers for everything.
  • Order the whole closet at once for order-together savings.
  • Use stock sizes where your wall allows.
  • Choose reach-in modules for a closet that already has a door: you don’t need a second set of doors behind it.
  • See the color first. Our color samples are mailed free, and every order is custom and can’t be returned.

Questions we get

Why don’t you list a price per linear foot?

Because the price depends on what is inside each cabinet, not only how much wall it covers. A foot of double hang and a foot of drawers are different jobs. Each cabinet’s page and the Closet Builder price exactly what you choose, live.

Is delivery extra?

No, it’s included. The price you see is delivered to your curb anywhere in the lower 48 states and DC, and near Ringgold, GA, installation by our crew is included too.

Do I save by ordering everything together?

Yes. Cabinets ordered together cost less than the same cabinets bought one at a time, because we plan the whole order as one job. The Closet Builder and the cart show the saving.

Can I pay over time?

Yes. Checkout offers 0% APR for up to 24 months through Affirm or Klarna. You apply with them at checkout.
